El Día Mundial del Prematuro, que se celebra el 17 de noviembre, es uno de los días más importantes del año para crear conciencia sobre los desafíos y la carga que supone el parto prematuro a nivel mundial. El día fue iniciado por EFCNI y organizaciones matrices europeas asociadas en 2008. Los cofundadores internacionales LittleBigSouls (África), March of Dimes (EE.UU.) y National Premmie Foundation (Australia) se unieron a las celebraciones e hicieron del Día Mundial del Prematuro un movimiento intercontinental. Mientras tanto, innumerables personas y organizaciones de más de 100 países unen fuerzas con actividades, eventos especiales y se comprometen a actuar para ayudar a abordar el nacimiento prematuro y mejorar la situación de los bebés prematuros y sus familias.
Todos están cordialmente invitados a unirse a este día con actividades o eventos: organizaciones de padres, hospitales, organizaciones sin fines de lucro, profesionales de la salud, sociedades, empresas, políticos, medios de comunicación e individuos. No importa cuánto tiempo, dinero o mano de obra puedas dedicar: ¡incluso con cosas simples puedes marcar la diferencia!
Además del color violeta, que representa sensibilidad y excepcionalidad, la línea de calcetines se ha convertido en un símbolo del Día Mundial del Prematuro. El pequeño par de calcetines morados, enmarcados por nueve calcetines de bebé de tamaño completo, simboliza: 1 de cada 10 bebés nace prematuro.
